Study of Naturally Occurring Asbestos in Japanese Native Soils (2007)
NIES engaged EFA as a team member in a 2007 nationwide soil survey of naturally-occurring asbestos (NOA).
EFA supported the NIES soil study by identifying potential naturally-occurring asbestos sites and collecting 36 soil samples from multiple locations across Japan. The soil samples were analyzed by PLM and TEM methodologies for naturally-occurring asbestos content. EFA also collected air samples in locations where the soil tested positive for asbestos content to determine background asbestos-in-air content. The survey specifically proved that tremolite asbestos is a naturally-occurring mineral in Japanese soils at certain locations.
